How did Ohio come up with a quirky name like Licking County? It’s not because of an abundance of ice cream parlors or lollypop makers. Licking was involved in the naming, but by deer, not people. Native Americans used salt licks to attract deer in the county’s fertile hunting grounds. Native Americans also left the area with world acclaim - it’s home to the world’s largest set of geometric earthworks that served as cathedrals and astronomical observatories to the Hopewells more than 2,000 years ago. The Newark Earthworks have been selected for the U.S. World Heritage tentative list, the first step toward becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
