Dublin was named after the Irish city in 1810 when Irish surveyor John Shields said the countryside reminded him of his birthplace. Settlers first arrived in 1801 from Pennsylvania and Kentucky, bringing their characteristic stone architecture still seen in Dublin today. When the National Road reached Columbus in 1833, Dublin boomed as shops and taverns lined the streets. Many of these early 19th century buildings still remain and are home to boutiques, restaurants and pubs in Historic Dublin, a National Historic District. Dublin celebrates its heritage with the Dublin Irish Festival, one of the largest Irish festivals in the country.
